Abstract

1515775 Testing cigarettes photo-electrically AMF Inc 3 June 1976 [3 June 1975] 22956/76 Heading G1A In a method of testing a cigarette S wherein light reflected from an end T is used as a first measure representing a property of the cigarette, light reflected from part of the side near that end T is used as a second measure representing the distance A of the end T from first measuring means FO 1 , and combined with the first measure. A constant-intensity lamp L 1 illuminates the end T via an intermingled circular-section transmitting/ receiving fibre-optic bundle FO 1 , light reflected from the end T being detected, S1, to provide an amplified, G 1, linearized, LN1, reflectance signal V 1 . A second constant-intensity lamp L 2 illuminates part of the side of the cigarette via an intermingled bundle FO 2 having a rectangular section with the long side parallel to the cigarette axis, and positioned where variations in the spacing A of the end T from the bundle FO 1 will be accompanied by variations in the portion of bundle FO 2 illuminated by the side portion of the cigarette. A compensating signal V 2 representing the extent of this portion is subtracted from V 1 in SM to give a difference signal V u compensated against variations in the alignment of the end T and representing only the cigarette-end reflectance, the signal V u being compared with a reference signal V o to control a reject signal CS.
