Abstract

The contactless measuring instrument has an oscillating optical scanner and a wire holding support (33). The wire or fibre (22) whose diameter is to be measure is placed alongside a reference wire (23) whose diameter is known. The scanner consists of a photoelectric sensor (1) which can swing pendulously about a pivot (31). The sensor (1) can detect a beam of light emitted by a filament lamp (19), transmitted through a matt glass (32) and alternatively obstructed by the two wires (22, 23). The signals generated by the sensor (1) are amplified and modified to obtain a voltage proportional to the difference between the diameters of the sample and the reference wires.
