Abstract

1515505 Automatic steering of root crop harvesters J D DYSON and C R DYSON 4 Aug 1975 32552/75 Heading A1F [Also in Division B7] A root crop harvester has at least one pair of feelers 14 which in use takes up a position determined by the crop row being harvested, and which one misalignment of the harvester relative to the crop row is arranged to effect the steerage of the harvester in such a way that it follows the crop row. In the embodiment shown, the feelers are carried by bows 16 having two limbs 16L, 16R which are pivotally connected about horizontal axes to brackets 12 mounted on a transverse bar 10 secured to a forward part of the harvester chassis. Each limb of the bows has an upper central part 20L, 20R which carries an eye 22L, 22R; a rod 24 extends laterally of the harvester and passes through all the eyes. On each side of each eye, a spring 26 surrounds the rod and is maintained in slight compression between the adjacent eye and a collar 28 secured to the rod consequently the combined lateral displacements of all the feelers 14 result in a nett lateral force being applied to the rod 24, movement of which operates a spool valve 58 which controls the steering of the harvester.
