Abstract

1515504 Automatic steering for root crop harvesters J D DYSON and C R DYSON 4 Aug 1975 [3 May 1974] 19581/74 Heading A1F [Also in Division B7] A root crop harvester has one or more self-seeking units, a change in the lateral position of which relative to the harvester, generates a signal which is used to regulate the lateral position of the unit relative to the crop row being harvested, by steering the harvester or by moving the unit laterally of the harvester. One embodiment of the invention Fig. 1 (not shown), is as described in Specification 1515505 differing only in that the feelers of that harvester are here provided by digger shares. The embodiment shown in Fig. 2 incorporates in a modified form the automatic harvester steering system shown in Fig. 1. Additionally lateral deflections of the shares 107 are employed to operate a spool valve 111 which actuates a ram 112 to move the frame 114, from which the shares are suspended, laterally of the harvester along a transverse beam; thus the shares are centralised over the row crop being harvested. The automatic steering can be disengaged by a hand lever 122. In the embodiment of Fig. 5, lateral deflections of squeeze wheels 307 operate switches 454, 456, 458, 460 which energises a solenoid to open a spool valve 111 and operate a ram 112 which moves the frame 114 laterally of the harvester along a beam 113. Switches 420, 422, 424, 426 operated by a cam bar 410 produce a signal dependent on the lateral position of the wheels 307 and the frame 114 to the harvester; this signal is summation with like signals from other pairs of wheels, may be used to effect steering of the harvester, Fig. 6 (not shown) shows an automatic steering system wherein lateral deflections of free running squeeze wheels (200, 202) operate proximity switches which control a potentiometer circuit (ACEBDF).
