Abstract

1515117 Float-operated switches RUSSELL HOBBS Ltd 13 Jan 1976 [17 Dec 1974] 54426/74 Heading H1N An electric kettle comprises a float 21 on one end of a rotatably mounted member 19 which extends through a wall of the kettle, the other end co-operating with a switch contact to disengage the switch contacts when the liquid surface falls below a predetermined level. In the embodiment shown, a projection 25 on a push-rod 17 engages the end of switch arm 15, which is normally biased into the disengaged position, to close the contacts 14, 16 and latch arm 15 behind the face 26 on arm 18 of member 19, latching occurring only when there is sufficient liquid in the kettle. The contacts can be opened by pulling rod 17, when the inclined surface 27, which engages surface 28 on arm 18 when the latch is engaged, forces arm 18 downwards to open the latch. Arm 18 may comprise a steam-operated bimetallic element to open the latch when the kettle boils, or a separate bimetallic element can be used. Member 19 may carry an insulating member which prevents closure of the switch when the liquid surface is too low. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 3a, 3b, not shown) one of the switch contacts is moved by a cam on one end of the rotatably mounted member, the other contact being movable by a manually operable rocking dolly which is moved into the "off" position by a bimetallic element when the kettle boils.
