Abstract

1406428 Mechanical switches; latching and unlatching switches; thermal switches CREDA ELECTRIC Ltd 20 Oct 1972 [23 Oct 1971] 49343/71 Heading H1N An electric immersion heater 6 in a liquid heater 1 is controlled by a switch 7 normally biased open but capable of being latched to the closed position by a latch element 15 (a rod), switch 7 being released by a detector 19 when the liquid boils, detector 19 being submerged in the liquid in use. To close switch 7, pushbutton 12 is depressed which through tail 13 pushes plate 14 which pivots lever 9 about axis 11 which pushes spring arm 10 attached to switch 7 to depress button 8 to close switch 7. If the liquid is not boiling, detector 19 (a plate with flanges round the edge) falls under the action of gravity and pivots rod 15 about axis 18 to slide it along the arm of slot 16 in lever 9 away from axis 11 to latch lever 9 and switch 7 closed. When the liquid boils, the turbulence over heater 6 lifts detector 19 which pivots rod 15 back towards axis 11 so that it enters the arm of slot 16 at right angles to the longitudinal axis of lever 9 and releases lever 9 which is urged back to its original position by spring arm 10 releasing switch 7 to open its contacts. If it is desired to release switch 7 before the liquid boils, pushbutton 23 may be depressed which moves arm 24 to urge rod 15 towards axis 11 and into the arm shown in Fig. 2 of slot 16 to release lever 9 and hence switch 7. A safety device is provided which prevents setting of the latch and/or releases the latch if there is insufficient liquid in heater 1. This takes the form of a float 20 on an arm 21 having an angled portion 22 which engages under detector 19, as shown in Fig. 1, to prevent detector 19 falling or to raise detector 19 if it has already fallen. Alternatively instead of float 20, there may be a bimetal attached to heater 6, the other end of the bimetal co-operating with rod 15, or a spring member restrained by a low melting- point alloy fusible element. Also heater 6 may be mounted beneath the bottom 3 of heater 1. The liquid enters heater 1 through pipe 5. Heater 1 may be a domestic sink water heater, or a tea-urn, or electric kettle, &c.
