Abstract

1513126 Measure core loss in steel samples BRITISH STEEL CORP 30 April 1975 [31 Jan 1974] 4499/74 Heading G1N [Also in Division H4] In a method of testing the core loss of a sample of steel, the steel is formed into an Epstein square core having a primary winding 4 coupled to a secondary 8, connected with an air flux mutual inductor 12 to compensate for flux transfer between the primary and secondary windings in the absence of core 2. The core loss is determined by feeding signals representative of the current through primary winding 4 and the voltage across secondary winding 8 to a multiplier 20. Since the current through the sample will vary considerably from sample to sample an automatically variable sensitivity control circuit 28 is provided which has its gain adjusted in steps, see Div. H3-5, to maintain the signal level applied to the multiplier in a predetermined range. Core loss is displayed on the analogue or digital voltmeter 26.
