Abstract

A web-like textile material made of cellulose fibres is dyed with water-soluble sulphur dyes by the two-bath method. The textile material is padded in succession and without drying it in-between first with a dye liquor with the addition of a partial amount of sodium sulphide and then overpadded with the hot reducing agent liquor containing sodium sulphide and sodium polysulphide, the total amount of sodium sulphide being at most 50% by weight of the known sulphide demand. This is followed by an air passage of at least 10 seconds. The textile material is then passed through an open-width washer in which the dye(s) applied by padding is or are reconverted into its or their water-soluble disulphide form by reoxidation. The additional use of sodium polysulphide as redox buffer avoids spontaneous oxidation of the leuco dye by atmospheric oxygen during the air passage, which may give rise to undesirable bronzing effects.
