Abstract

Alkyl esters of the formula <IMAGE> are obtained from corresponding alkyl 2,2-dimethylbut-3-ene-1-carboxylates by heating them with carbon tetrachloride in the presence of a catalyst, for example a transition metal salt or a complex compound of such a salt with an organic compound, such as ferrochloride or the ferrochloride/benzoin complex. The compounds are starting materials for the preparation of trans-2,2-dimethyl-3-(2,2-dichloroethenyl)cyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid and esters thereof, which are known insecticides.
