Abstract
1511847 Moulding seamless hollow articles D A TAYLOR 1 April 1975 [1 April 1974] 43448/74 Heading B5A In the moulding of closed hollow articles from thermo-settable materials by initially moulding two parts and then uniting them, during the initial moulding and partial curing the mating edges of the two parts are subjected to a lower temperature than the remainder to prevent a skin forming thereon, and after the two parts are united by pressing together (without the use of gaseous pressurizing agents), the whole of the material is subjected to a temperature sufficient to completely cure the article, thereby avoiding any seam line between the two parts. Cores for tennis and golf balls are compression, transfer, or injection moulded from rubber between moulds 5, 6 in relatively movable plates 2, 3 and cores 14 carried in a plate 4 which is removable from between the plates 2, 3. A peripheral flange 19 of each core 14 enters a groove 15 in a cooling plate 11, 12 which are carried by the plate 4 and to which the core are secured by insulating washers 23 and nuts 22. Rubber is placed in the cavity 27 formed between the telescoping parts 26, 28 of plate 4 and is heated by electric elements in passages 29-32. On closing the press the rubber is forced by the movement together of parts 26, 28 through nozzles 34 and ring gates 37 into the moulds. The majority of the rubber cures to 60% of the optimum but the portion in part 16 of the groove 15 is cooled by fluid in passages 18 within the cooling plate so that it cures slightly but does not form a skin. The moulds are opened, the cores removed, and on reclosing the moulds the peripheries of the rubber parts are united and quickly reach the temperature of the remainder so that curing goes to completion throughout. The chamber 27 may be omitted, and either blanks are placed in the mould cavities for moulding solely by compression, or rubber is injected from an external source (Fig. 8, not shown), through a sprue and runners in plate 4 to nozzles (49) similar to 34.
