Abstract
1511494 Fuel elements UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 7 Aug 1975 [20 Aug 1974] 36640/74 Heading G6C A nuclear fuel assembly comprises a cluster 1 of fuel rods 2 supported in a first set of lattice positions by transverse grids 3, 4 and 5, the interspaces between the rods defining subchannels through which a main coolant flows in the direction of the arrow A, a second set of lattice positions coinciding with some of the sub-channels and being occupied by satellite conduits 7 and a central conduit 8 for auxiliary coolant. The conduits 7, 8 are closed at their lower ends and connected at their upper ends via a coolant manifold 9 to a supply S of auxiliary coolant, to supplement the main coolant. The conduits 7, 8 have a series of holes (7a), 8a in their side-walls through which auxiliary coolant is ejected laterally. The ejection holes (7a) are drilled at levels I-IX, alternately as a single radial hole 16 and as a pair of holes 17 and the conduits 7 are arranged so that the pattern of ejection holes appears as shown in Fig. 3 at levels I, III, V, VII and IX, and as shown in Fig. 4 at levels II, IV, VI and VIII. The orientation of ejection holes 8a in the central conduit 8 is alternately displaced by 60 degrees so that the effect at the respective levels shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is achieved. It is advantageous to provide a further set of holes at the top of the cluster, designated level X. At level X, the satellite conduits have three holes equispaced at 120 degrees (Fig. 6c, not shown) while the central conduit has six holes equispaced at 60 degrees (Fig. 7b, not shown).
