Abstract
In order to take more account of the cross-sectional shape in heat treatment and to be able to treat the switch components continuously under control, the rail surface is first heated down to a depth of up to 30 mm to the austenitisation temperature. The austenitised rail surface is then quenched by blowing with compressed air. In a first stage, quenching is effected from the austenitisation temperature down to just above the region of the perlite transformation at 650 to 450 DEG C by strong blowing and subsequently, in at least one second stage, the quenching is continued by blowing which is restricted as compared with the first stage in such a way that the temperature range set on the rail surface before the perlite transformation is not exceeded and this cooling intensity is retained in the region of the fastest perlite transformation until the perlite transformation is complete. Preferably, the compressed air is blown only from above onto the switch components standing on the foot and moving continuously forwards. The width of each compressed air jet here corresponds to at least the maximum width of the switch component. <IMAGE>
