Abstract

1510602 Piezoelectric transducers TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO Ltd 18 June 1976 [24 June 1975] 25297/76 Heading H4J An electro-acoustic transducer comprises a housing 12 having a permanently polarized piezoelectric element 2 (e.g. of LiNbO 3 or LiTaO 3 ) which releases oxygen when heated to 200‹C. and more and an unpolarized element 5 having no piezoelectric action (e.g. of LiNbO 3 or LiTaO 3 ) which also releases oxygen when heated to 200‹C. and more. The construction minimizes degradation of the piezoelectric element 2 through loss of oxygen due, for example, to oxidation of the inner wall of housing 12. The amounts of oxygen given off from the piezoelectric element 2 and the unpolarized element 5 depends on the volume of elements 2 and 5. Thus if the two elements are both of the same material (e.g. LiNbO 3 ) and the volumetric ratio of the piezoelectric element 2 to the unpolarized element 5 is 1:9, then 10% of the amount of oxygen necessary for the regain of the pressure equilibrium is evolved from piezoelectric element 2 and the remainder is evolved from element 5. Thus a relatively small amount is released from element 2, thereby substantially reducing its degradation with time. The element 5 is preferably made from electrically insulating material and has a lead 6 extending through it to a palladium element 4. Lead 6 is connected to the centre wire 11 of coaxial cable 9. The palladium electrode 4 assists in containing oxygen in the piezoelectric element 2. The device may be a transmitter or receiver of vibrations from the wall 2 of housing 12.
