Abstract

1510571 Antibiotic 32,999 RP RHONE POULENC INDUSTRIES 12 March 1976 13 March 1975 1 July 1975 3 Feb 1976] 10045/76 Heading C2C Novel antibiotic 32,999 RP of the formula and acid addition salts thereof, are prepared (a) by microbiological reduction of carminomycin of the formula or an acid addition salt thereof, (b) by aerobically cultivating Streptomyces coeruleorubidus DS 8,899(NRRL 3046), DS 31,723(NRRL 3045) or DS7,126 (NRRL 8098) or Streptomyces bifurcus DS23,219 (NRRL 3539) or a mutant thereof capable of producing the antibiotic, in an aqueous nutrient medium containing assimilable sources of C,N and inorganic substances, and an adjuvant selected from barbital, phenobarbital, butobarbital, penthiobarbital and alkali metal salts of said barbitals, amethopterin, sulphanilamide, sulphathiazole and sulphapyridazine, and isolating the desired product from the medium ; and (c) by aerobically cultivating Streptomyces atroviolaceus DS 8,938 (NRRL 8148) or a mutant thereof capable of producing the antibiotic, using an aqueous nutrient medium containing assimilable sources of C, N and inorganic substances, and isolating the desired product from the medium hydrolysis. Pharmaceutical compositions having antitumour activity comprise, as active ingredient, antibiotic 32,999RP or a non-toxic acid addition salt thereof, in association with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. 32,999RP may be converted to its aglycone by acid hydrolysis.
