Abstract

1510152 Non-aqueous cells UNION CARBIDE CORP 23 May 1975 [29 May 1974] 22488/75 Heading H1B An electrochemical cell comprises an anode 14, a cathode collector 18, 20 and a non-aqueous cathode electrolyte 26 comprising an ionically conductive solution of an ionizing solute dissolved in a liquid halide solvent selected from: sulphur monochloride (S2Cl2), sulphur monobromide (S2Br2), selenium tetrafluoride (SeF4), selenium monobromide (Se2Br2), thiophosphoryl chloride (PSCl3), thiophosphoryl bromide (PSBr3), vanadium pentafluoride (VF5), lead tetrachloride (PbCl4), titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4), disulphur decafluoride (S2F10), tin bromide trichloride (SnBrCl3), tin dibromide dichloride (SnBr2Cl2), and tin tribromide chloride (SnBr3Cl). The above solvents will perform the dual function of acting as a solvent for the ionizing solute and as the active cathode depolarizer of the cell ("cathode-electrolyte"). The solute may be a complex salt of a Lewis acid and an inorganic ionizable salt, e.g. LiAlCl4. Suitable organic cosolvents include: nitrobenzene, THF, 1,3-dioxolane, 3-methyl-2- oxazolidone, propylene carbonate, y - butyrolactone, sulpholane, ethylene glycol sulphite, dimethylsulphite, dimethyl sulphoxide and benzoyl chloride. Suitable inorganic solvents include: phosphorus oxychloride, sulphuryl chloride, thionyl chloride, pyrosulphuryl chloride and selenium oxychloride. Other examples of the above are disclosed. Anode 14 may be alkali metals (Li,Na,K are the preferred anodes), alkaline earth metals, or mixtures or alloys of these, or Al5 solid solutions (e.g. Li-Mg) and intermetallic compounds (e.g. lithium monoaluminide) may also be used. The collector may be a porous graphite 18 together with a graphite rod 20. A separator in the form of a sheet 22 of compacted polypropylene fibres and a perforated disc 24 of PTFE may be provided. The cell is enclosed in a Mg can 12 and sealed with a PTFE disc 28 and an epoxy resin layer 30. A fluorescent lamp includes a filling gas composed of 75-90% krypton and 25-10% neon and has a conductive metal strip 24 surrounding and electrically insulated from at least one of the lamp electrodes 22. The metal strip 24 may be of generally elliptical shape and supported by a lead 25 from the lamp stem 15. An 84% zirconium aluminium getter band 30 may be coated on the outer surface of the metal strip 24, with a mercury dispensing material initially coated on the other side of the strip 24.
