Abstract

1365828 Sodium-halogen cells GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 31 May 1972 [15 June 1971 18 June 1971] 25377/72 Heading H1B A sealed primary cell has an anode of sodium, sodium amalgam, or sodium in contact with an ionically conductive liquid; has a solid electrolyte of sodium-#-alumina; and has a cathode containing bromine or iodine. Bromine cathodes may be of liquid bromine (which may fill a carbon felt or a foam material) or may be of bromine in a foam material) or may be of bromine in a propylene carbonate solution of sodium bromide or iodide or in an aqueous solution of sodium bromide. Iodine cathodes consist of solid iodine in contact with a solution of iodine and sodium iodide in methanol. The anode, when not consisting of sodium or of sodium amalgam, consists of sodium in contact with a saturated solution of sodium iodide in propylene carbonate. The cell structure shown has an anode casing 12 of iron-nickel-cobalt alloy, nickel, niobium, or tantalum; a cathode casing 13 of niobium or tantalum; and glass rings 19 fused to the casing halves 12, 13 and to the solid electrolyte 16 to form hermetic seals. Materials other than carbon felts &c. are introduced to the formed casing through tubes sealed off at welds 17, 18. Various cells are also described, to illustrate the system, in which the anode compartment only is sealed.
