Abstract
1508803 Batteries of solid electrolyte cells INDUSTRY SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 25 June 1975 [3 July 1974] 29550/74 Heading H1B A battery comprises a group of sodiumsulphur cells nested one within the other. As shown two cells are connected in series by a common bipolar stainless steel electrode 4. The first cell consists of a molybdenum current collecting rod 9, the end 26 of which forms the positive terminal and is provided with a hole through which liquid sulphur is fed to impregnate graphite felt in a space 10. Liquid sodium is fed to a space 6, surrounding a #-alumina electrolyte tube 1, via a filling tube 29. The wetting of the electrolyte by the sodium is assisted by a wire mesh wick 31. A similar cell surrounds the first cell and is provided with a liquid sulphur filling tube 27 and a liquid sodium filling tube 30, the tubes being sealed by crimping and welding when the battery has been filled. The electrode 4 and an outer, low alloy steel case 7 have portions 12 and 19 respectively of a nickel-iron alloy, which portions are sealed to an alpha-alumina end plate 17 by glass frit seals 15. The graphite felt in spaces 5, 10 is capped with alpha-alumina spacers 13, 22. In a modification the filling tubes in the end plate are omitted. An arrangement of four nested, series connected cells as well as a parallel connection of two nested cells is also described. Alternatively some of the cells may be series connected and others in parallel in the same battery.
