Abstract

1509725 Ultraviolet irradiation UNION CARBIDE CORP 15 April 1975 [16 April 1974 (2)] 15339/75 Addition to 1434996 Heading H5R To protect the surface of a moving product P travelling at up to 1000 ft./min. by means of an inert gas, e.g. N 2 , He, CO 2 , while it passes through an irradiation (e.g. U.V.) chamber 12 having entry 14 and exit 16 tunnels, the gas is fed from a plenum chamber 19 via one or more transverse slots 20 over the whole width of the product into either tunnel at angle α towards the surface, where α is 45-85 degrees if in the entry tunnel 14 or 45-75 degrees if in the exit tunnel 16, with a velocity component opposite to the product velocity and at least equal in magnitude. For N 2 the volumetric flow out of each tunnel should not exceed 650 cu. ft./hour per foot of tunnel width, for He 5000, for CO 2 360. The angle α should tend towards the maximum of its range, preferably 75 degrees, for speeds below 200 ft./min. If in the entrance tunnel the slot(s) should be at least ten times the minimum tunnel crosssection from the tunnel mouth.
