Abstract

1509401 Filter; binding particulate inorganic materials IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 May 1975 [7 May 1974 (2)] 17514/75 and 17515/75 Divided out of 1509402 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] A filter is produced by forming a shaped structure from a mouldable composition comprising a mixture of: (a) a particulate inorganic material; (b) a binder for the particulate material comprising a complex phosphate of aluminium containing at least one chemically-bound hydroxylic compound ROH, where R is hydrogen or an organic group, and at least one anion of a strong inorganic acid (other than an oxyphosphorus acid) or of a carboxylic acid, and (c) a liquid dispersant for the binder, and binding the particulate inorganic material into a rigid structure by treating the structure to decompose the complex phosphate binder into an aluminium phosphate, the particle size of the particulate material being so chosen that a porous structure is produced which is suitable for use as a filter. The particulate inorganic material may be a refractory such as an alumina, a silica, an aluminium silicate, a nitride, porcelain or china clay. The dispersant is preferably a solvent for the binder and where the nature of the binder is appropriate water or an alcohol can be used. Suitable complex phosphates of aluminium are described in, e.g. Specifications 1,322,722; 1,322,724; 1,379,562 and 1,385,327.
