1509253 Piston ALCAN ALUMINIUMWERK NURNBERG GmbH 21 July 1975 [23 July 1974] 30498/75 Heading F2T In a light metal or iron piston cast in one piece, cooling gallery 2 is intersected by axial and/or radial (Fig. 2, not shown) pillars 3, which may be of circular cross-section (Fig. 5, not shown). Alternatively or additionally, the gallery surface may be formed with fins, which do not extend right across the cavity. A highly porous carbon casting core is formed with bores and/or slots to provide the pillars and/or fins, respectively. The core is removed, after the casting has cooled, by being burnt away.
