Abstract

1508879 Detection of infectious hepatitis A antigen on antibody MERCK & CO Inc 5 Dec 1975 [9 Dec 1974 4 Sept 1975] 50062/75 Heading G1B Infectious hepatitis A antigen or antibody present in a sample is detected by a method comprising adding either purified hepatitis A antigen or hepatitis A antibody to a series of dilutions of the sample, incubating the mixtures so formed to permit antigen and antibody to react to form a complex, adding complement to each mixture and incubating again to permit complement to react with the complex, adding human type O red blood cells to cause agglutination with the complex and estimating the amount of agglutination in each mixture. The sample may be human or non- human serum or plasma or an extract of liver cells. The test may be carried out in veronal buffer containing 1% gellatine (GVB) with addition of dithiothreitol - EDTA-GVB solution immediately before the red blood cells. Mercaptoethanol or dithioerythritol may be used instead of dithiothreitol.
