Abstract

1508599 Grippers BRITISH STEEL CORP 25 July 1975 [26 July 1974] 33214/74 Heading B8H [Also in Division B3] A roll handling apparatus, suitable for changing a work roll in a rolling mill, includes a rigid frame 10 from which four fingers 28 and 29 extend parallel to one another, the fingers being able to embrace and support a work roll. The fingers are supported on a frame portion 12 which may be inclined at 45 degrees to a vertical portion 11, to handle inclined rolls. The upper fingers 28 are slidable in guides 17 away from the lower fingers 29 by urging a pair of pivoted hand levers 23 towards one another. Springs 24 and 25 bias the fingers together, however, to grip a roll between them, collars 29 on the fingers co-operating with a roll groove. Levers 22 act on lock assemblies 20 to hold the upper fingers in an adjusted position. The apparatus is supported by a ring 13 on a hoist which can be adjustably counterbalanced to assist in manual manipulation of the apparatus. The fingers 29 can be rotated by handwheels to align a supported roll with a keyway in the mill.
