At small input currents, little voltage is dropped across resistor 34 so the base-emitter voltages of transistors 34 and 36 are substantially equal. The output current at 33 is therefore -HoI 1 where Ho is the ratio of the emitter areas of transistors 36 and 35. As I 1 increases the voltage drop across resistor 34 reduces the base-emitter voltage of transistor 36 relative to transistor 35, thereby reducing the gain.
