Abstract

1506508 Magnetic head MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 16 Dec 1975 [20 Dec 1974 (2) 31 Dec 1974 (2) 9 Jan 1975] 51512/75 Heading G5R A magnetic head including a magnetoresistive element 2, is formed with magnetic shielding members 12, 13 which screen the element from the fields of tracks 9, 10 &c. adjacent the track 8 being scanned. As shown in Figs. 4a and 4b a substrate is formed of glass 1 and ferromagnetic material 411 bonded together on which is deposited an insulating layer 412 of, e.g. SiO 2 . A thin ferromagnetic layer is now deposited from which the magnetoresistive element 2 is formed by etching or other techniques followed by a second insulating layer 415 of SiO 2 . A second element of glass 413 and ferromagnetic material 414 is now formed and bonded to the layer 415 of SiO 2 and the head is finished by grinding to the plane A-A leaving shielding members formed from the remaining ferromagnetic material 411, 414. Various other constructions including shields formed at an angle to the base of the head are described.
