Abstract
1453288 Magnetic heads COMPAGNIE INTERNATIONALE POUR L'INFORMATIQUE 31 Oct 1973 [7 Nov 1972] 50691/73 Heading G5R A magnetic head for recording and playback has part of a coil 5 located in a transducing gap defined between a pair of composite polepieces; each polepiece having a first layer 4, 6 of magnetically soft material adjacent the coil, and a second layer 3, 7 located between the first layer 4, 6 and an outer, third layer 2, 8 of magnetically hard material, the second layer having a structure which will magnetostatically decouple the first and third layers from one another. The layers 4 and 6 are ineffective during recording giving an effective transducing gap length of e2, Fig. 4, layers 2 and 8 being inactive during playback whereby the effective gap length is e1. The layers 2 and 8 are of high saturation induction and flux density, substantially zero remanent flux density material with relative permeability greater than 50, such as cobalt, iron-cobalt alloy, or preferably pure iron. The layers 4 and 6 are of low saturation flux density, very high permeability material, such as iron-nickel alloy, with the easy axis of magnetization parallel to the gap width (i.e. parallel to L3, Fig. 1). Layers 2, 8 and/or layers 4, 6 may each be formed by a stack of magnetic films, the films being electrically insulated from one another. The layers 3 and 7 may be of non- magnetic dielectric material, such as silicon dioxide, or may each be formed by a stack of films of alternate magnetically soft and hard magnetic materials. The various layers 2 to 8 are formed by vapour deposition in vacuo on a substrate 1. Coil 5 is an insulated multi-turn, flat coil, with at least one turn bared at the transducing gap. The width L1 of layer 2, 8 may be equal to but is preferably greater than the width L2 of layers 4, 6, whereby the write track is wider than the read track.
