Abstract

1506238 Oxyhydrochlorination B F GOODRICH CO 23 May 1975 [22 July 1974] 22534/75 Heading C2C Chlorinated derivatives of ethylene are produced by oxyhydrochlorination of ethylene or a chlorinated ethylene derivative; separating in a stream from the process any unwanted chlorinated ethylene derivatives and other byproducts ; injecting the stream into a combustion catalyst bed comprising 10-50% by weight of Cr 2 O 3 and 90-50% by weight of Al 2 O 3 and/or SiO 2 , the catalyst having a surface area of at least 10 sq.m./g.and being non-friable and resistant to attrition; injecting O 2 -containing gas containing #2 moles of O 2 per mole of C in the stream into the bed along with the stream; maintaining the bed at 300-450‹ C. to produce a mixture of hot combustion gases comprising HCl and being substantially free of Cl 2 and chlorohydrocarbon materials; and recycling the mixture of gases to the oxyhydrochlorination step. The catalyst is preferably maintained at 350-400‹ C. and at 25-150 p.s.i.g. It is fluidized by the injection of O 2 -containing gas thereinto. The process is suitable for use in the production of vinyl chloride.
