Abstract

1286760 Vapour phase TiO 2 SOC ITALIANA RESINE SpA 13 July 1970 [31 July 1969] 33956/70 Heading C1N TiO 2 is produced by burning a combustible gas in burner 4, feeding O 2 tangentially through inlets 5 into cylindrical zone 1, and feeding TiCl 4 preheated to at most 500‹ C. through slits 7 in the frusto-conical zone at a speed of 10-70 m/s. The slits are 0À1-0À8 cm. wide and inclined at 30-60 degrees to the vertical. The temperature in reaction zone 3 is 1200- 1400‹ C. The combustible gas may be CO, H 2 , CH 4 , C 2 H 2 , or petroleum gases. The O 2 may be fed in at 15-40‹ C. and the TiCl 4 at 300-400‹ C. The molar O 2 : TiCl 4 ratio may be 1À15 : 1 to 1À4 : 1. AlCl 3 , SiCl 4 , or H 2 O may be added to the TiCl 4 . The product may be cooled with recycle gases.
