Abstract

Chlorinating and reducing gases are used to fluidize a bed of aluminium oxide or substances containing it whereby aluminium chloride is produced. Carbon monoxide and chlorine in equal volumes, or phosgene, preferably whilst still hot after its catalytic formation from the former gases may be used: an excess of 10-20 per cent. is suitable. A particle size greater than 0.1 mm. is preferred. A chamber filled with shaped bodies, e.g. porcelain or quartz may be arranged above the fluidized bed to entrap dust entrained in the gases, which react in said chamber to form aluminium chloride. In the example, phosgene preheated to 550-600 DEG C. is passed through a layer of aluminium oxide of grain diameter 0.5-1 mm. in a quartz tube at a rate of 3 litres/hr./sq. cm. cross section of said tube. 4 gms. of alumina/hr./sq. cm. is introduced into the layer, which is supported by a sieve plate and 10-15 cms. thick in the quiescent state.
