Abstract

1505709 Laminates TH GOLDSCHMIDT AG 4 Sept 1975 [4 Sept 1974] 36521/75 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Resins for use in laminating paper to chipboard are aminoplast resins containing a hardener obtained by reaction of phthalic anhydride with a polyalkylene glycol of M.W. 100-800 in a molar ratio of 1: 2 at 120- 140‹ C. for 10-40 minutes and neutralization of the product with an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or heterocyclic amine, or a mixture thereof. In Examples 1-3 1 mol of phthalic anhydride is heated with 2 mols of polyethylene glycol of M.W. 200 or 400 for 30 mins at 130‹ C., or polyethylene-polypropylene glycol of M.W. 600 for 20 mins at 135‹ C., and the product is diluted with water and neutralized with 1 mol of morpholine, methyl ethanolamine or triethylamine to give a 50% aqueous solution of hardener. These solutions are used to harden 55% aqueous melamine-formaldehyde syrup (n : F ratio 1 : 1À8), which is used to impregnate paper for laminating to chipboard.
