Abstract
1505122 IC engine intake manifolds and valves H BOHNLEIN 2 April 1975 [11 April 1974] 13571/75 Heading F1B The inlet manifold 6 supplying mixture from a carburetter 10 to the cylinders 2, 3, 4, 5 through respective inlet valves 7, 8 has valves 25, 26 associated with each pair of cylinders or each cylinder. The valves 25, 26 present the flow of gas in a direction from the cylinders to the carburetter. To seal the inlet valves the valve heads may engage a projection (18), Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), of a graphite or graphite and asbestos sealing ring (16) located in an undercut groove (15) in the respective seat. The inlet valve head may carry a valve-member (36, 43), Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), which engages a ring of material (42, 48) in the inner cylinder head surface surrounding the seat for the valve head when the head is seated. The valve-member is mounted on the valve head for pivotal movement about the valve axis. The carburetter has a needle valve (30), Fig. 6 (not shown), linked to the throttle valve and controlling fuel flow through a nozzle (29). The cylinder heads are air or water cooled and the sides of the heads containing the exhaust valves are cooled to a greater extent than the sides containing the inlet valves. The inlet and exhaust valves are controlled by cam means which cause the inlet valves to open after exhaust valve closure.
