Abstract

1505095 Activated carbon CLAIRAIRE Ltd 11 Nov 1976 [11 Nov 1975] 46465/75 Heading C1A A batch process for the production of materials composed wholly or predominantly of activated carbon from cellulosic cloth, especially a viscose rayon cloth, comprises padding the cloth to be carbonized with a solution of Lewis acid which is a halide of zinc, aluminium, calcium, magnesium or iron, drying and overfeeding the cloth over a breaking machine to soften the cloth, applying the cloth on to a drying frame in a tensionless condition, placing the frame in a furnace maintained at a pressure above atmosphere by an inert gas, passing the inert gas through the cloth depending from the frame and gradually heating the furnace to 300‹ C. over a period of 2 to 3 hours to drive off volatiles from the cloth, heating the cloth to substantially 900‹ to 950‹ C. over a period of substantially two hours, maintaining the temperature for a period of approximately one half hour, cooling the furnace to substantially 100‹ C. whilst maintaining an inert atmosphere therein and finally removing the lid or cover and the frame from the furnace. The process may be effected in a heat insulated furnace in which the cloth is suspended from hooks 1 on a frame or frames 2 attached to the underside of the lid 3 of the furnace. The furnace is heated by electric heat 4 and its sides and bottom are lagged with insulating material 6. Holes 9 in the lid provide for the escape of fumes. Carbon dioxide or other inert gas is supplied to the furnace by pipe 9, displacing air via holes 7. The supply of gas is then continued at slightly above atmospheric pressure during the heating cycle. The furnace is then allowed to cool to 100‹ C. while maintaining the inert atmosphere, and the lid 3 is then removed with the cloth. Cooling of the furnace is accelerated by circulating cooling air or liquid through pipes 12 in the furnace wall insulation, the exhaust gases from the furnace during cooling being fed to the inert gas inlet of a second furnace to preheat the material therein.
