Abstract
1505035 Overload protection discharge tube INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 27 April 1976 17035/76 Heading H1D An overload protection device comprises a discharge tube having electrodes 1-10 and 2-5 defining a discharge gap L in a sealed enclosure 3, the electrode 1-10 being mounted in a plug 7 of material which softens when the tube reaches a predetermined temperature, whereby external pressure pushes the electrode into the enclosure, and the discharge gap is short-circuited. As shown, the other electrode 2-5 is integral with the enclosure 3, which is made of metal, e.g. aluminium, copper, or iron-nickel-cobalt alloy. The plug 7 is made of glass, and is bonded against an internal shoulder 8 of the enclosure 3. The electrode 2-5 may have a recess 6 containing emissive material, and the tube may contain argon and helium at 0À3 atmos. One or both electrodes may have a conductive coating which will melt at the predetermined temperature to wet the electrodes to improve contact.
