Abstract

1458331 Line protectors RELIABLE ELECTRIC CO 2 Jan 1975 [4 Feb 1974] 146/75 Heading H2H A line-protector 2 comprises a gas-filled tube 30 with 2 opposed electrodes 32, 34 forming an arc gap 36, a conductive cap 4, a member 12 disposed within the cap and having a plurality of fingers 16 in conductive engagement with the cap, the fingers having extremities 18 outside the cap and an end 14 within the cap, a spring 44 applying pressure thereto, the tube 30 being mounted on a plurality of ledges 22 of the member 12 between the end 14 and the finger extremities 18, which extremities lie between portions 38 of the electrodes 32, 34 lying beyond the tube 30 so that the member 12 is in conductive contact with only one electrode 34 of the arc gap. The protector is screw mounted as shown to provide a path from a cable contact strip 54 to earth 50 via the gap 36. A block 42 of low melting point solder may be placed between the tube 30 and member 12 and may melt in an overcurrent situation. The finger extremities 18 will then be moved into contact with the other electrode 32 by the spring 44 to short out the gap and thereby protect it.
