Abstract

1504995 Water foils F WANKEL 19 June 1975 [20 June 1974 20 Aug 1974] 26205/75 Heading B7A A boat has a number of elongate foil or skid surfaces 3, 4, 5 disposed on struts 12 with their longitudinal axes extending in the direction of travel, with gaps 6 and 7 therebetween. The surfaces are made to be resilient and are joined at their centres to relatively thin struts 8, 9 and 10 which are connected to an arm 12. Such an arrangement damps out wave motion. The surfaces are arranged at a relatively small angle in the direction of travel, with their transverse axes parallel to the water surface. In Figs. 3, 4, 5, not shown, each skid surface is connected directly to the hull of a boat by a strut (20), and some may have their transverse axes parallel to the surface of the hull. When the boat is stationary the surfaces can form roll dampers.
