Abstract
1504446 Fishing rods BRUCE & WALKER Ltd J BRUCE and K G WALKER 13 Dec 1976 [17 May 1976] 20265/76 Heading A1A [Also in Division F2] A tube for a fishing rod, formed of synthetic resin reinforced with carbon fibres and glass fibres, is characterised in that the proportion of carbon fibre in the reinforcement is not greater than 30% by weight at one end of the tube and not less than 40% by weight at the other end, and at no point along the tube increases towards said one end. Preferably the proportion of carbon fibre at said other end is greater than 50% but not greater than 90% and the reinforcement may be in the form of a woven cloth or a felt. The tube is preferably tapered and of constant wall thickness along its length and the proportion of carbon fibre may change gradually along the length of the tube. In making such a tube an elongate sheet is wound upon a mandrel to provide a plurality of turns the sheet comprising two or more pieces of fibrous fabric arranged substantially edge to edge along the mandrel and the said pieces having the requisite fibre proportions. The adjacent edges preferably extend obliquely to the length of the sheet and may be formed with complementary serrations or castellations. The tube can be used as a top section of a fishing rod the or each lower section thereof comprising a tube of synthetic resin reinforced with carbon fibre fabric with or without a small proportion of glass fibre.
