Abstract

Detachable propelling installations; propelling, steering, and manoeuvring by screw propellers.- A submersible propelling and manoeuvring device capable of being lowered into the water is held against the ship's side by electro-magnetic means. The casing a contains a submersible electric motor, carries an electro-magnet band propeller e, and has a lifting chain h and cables f, g, for the magnet and motor respectively. When being lowered, the current to the magnet is weak, but when in position the full current is switched on. More than one unit may be employed and positioned so as to propel the ship, or manoeuvre as when in the vicinity of a quay. When used on wood or ferro-concrete ships, iron plates are attached to the hulls. When a prime mover operates the propeller, it may also drive a dynamo for generating current for the magnet.
