Abstract
1503969 Selective printing HEWLETTPACKARD CO 8 Aug 1975 [15 Nov 1974] 33193/75 Heading B6F Thermographic print head includes a substrate 10 (aluminium oxide), an etched glass glaze having mesas 12, a resistive layer 20 (tantalum nitride or tantalum/aluminium alloy), a conductive layer 22 (gold or aluminium), an ion migration barrier 32 produced by oxidation of the resistive layer 20 and a wear-resistant layer 30 (aluminium oxide). The oxidation of the layer 20 also raises its resistance. Thus a controlled duration of the step of oxidation can be used to alter the electrical characteristics of the print head. The heating element areas 34 may be arranged in a row to produce 5 x 7 matrix characters.
