Abstract

1502271 Sterilization DRAYTON CASTLE Ltd 2 June 1975 [5 June 1974] 24887/74 Heading A2D A method of sterilising a load in a sealed vessel comprises admitting steam into the vessel, removing air and condensate therefrom, and, during at least part of the sterilising cycle, mixing the air removed from the vessel with the condensate and recirculating the condensate/air mixture through the vessel. The mehtod may include the further steps of cooling the condensate after completion of the sterilising period and recirculating the cooled condensate to cool the load in the vessel. The sterilisation period should be long enough to sterilise the condensate/air mixture. The method may be carried out in the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 which comprises pressure vessel 1 containing plastics bags 2. Steam is admitted via valve 4 and condensate collected in pressure vessel 5. A steam trap 6 is provided in the air line 5a to separate any condensate from recirculating air, which air is mixed with recirculating condensate at a point closely adjacent the suction side of a pump 9. The resulting condensate/air mixture is passed to vessel 1 and preferably sprayed onto the plastics bags therein. A heat exchanger 11 is provided to reduce the temperature of the condensate and thus the plastics bags. The bags may be arranged on trays as indicated in Fig. 3 (not shown), each tray being inclined slightly to the horizontal so that condensate passes over the bag in the uppermost tray and drains away and cascades onto the bags in the tray below. Each tray may be provided with apertures.
