Abstract

1501819 Cation exchange membrane for electrodialysis ASAHI GLASS CO Ltd 3 May 1976 18002/76 Heading C7B A process for electrodialysis of a base containing aqueous solution wherein there is used a cation exchange membrane made of a copolymer of ethylene and an unsaturated carboxylic acid or salt thereof having an ion-exchange capacity of 0À7 to 3 m equivalent/g (dry resin). The unsaturated carboxylic acid may be acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid fumaric anhydride, quaternary ammonium, Na, K, Zn, Ca, Mg salts thereof or a precursor thereof e.g. esters, amides or nitrides thereof which form the unsaturated carboxylic acid or salts thereof by hydrolysis or neutralization. The copolymer may additionally comprise a comoner e.g. vinyl chloride, styrene, vinylidene chloride, vinyl alcohol or vinyl ether and may be reinforced by a support e.g. on olefin polymer, fluorine containing polymer or vinyl halide polymer in the form of cloth, film or woven fabric. The cation exchange membrane can be used in conjunction with an anion exchange membrane e.g. copolymer of styrene and divinylbenzene reinforced with P.V.C. cloth and diaphragms of PTFE, asbestos, copolymers of tetrahydrafluoethylene and sulphonated or carboxylated perfluorovinyl ether in the electrodialysis of base containing solutions e.g. KOH, NaOH, ammonia, aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic lower amines solutions.
