Abstract

1,184,321. Fluorine-containing copolymers. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 15 May, 1968, No. 23099/68. Heading C3P. [Also in Division HI] ] . Trifluorovinylsulphonyl fluoride and tetrafluoroethylene are polymerized in perfluorodimethylcyclobutane under N 2 F 2 at 75‹ C. and 900 p.s.i.g. The copolymer obtained is reacted with methanolic NaOH containing a little H 2 0 and Et 3 N to give the sodium salt of the copolymer containing sulphonic acid groups. The free acid is obtained by treating the sodium salt with methanolic HCI. Perfluoro-[2-(2-fluorosulphonylethoxy)-propyl vinyl ether] and tetrafluoroethane can be similarly copolymerized and treated. Ion exchange films of the acids are obtained by moulding the initial copolymers and hydrolysing the sulphonyl fluoride groups. The films are useful in electric cells.
