Abstract

1500901 Mixing apparatus CEMENTATION RESEARCH Ltd 27 Jan 1975 [25 Oct 1973] 49858/73 Heading B1C [Also in Division E1] A hydrated colloidal suspension is formed by mixing a synthetic material with water, or a natural or synthetic material with sea water, and subjecting it to sheer at a rate of 1,000-500,000 sec<SP>-1</SP> in a colloid mixer. A suitable mixer has a stater 2 with inlet 1, a rotor 3 and outlet 6; the gap between rotor and stator may be adjustable from 15 to 50 thousandths of an inch and the rotor speed from 1800-3,000 rev./min. The diameter of the rotor and stator may be 10 inches, the stator face being recessed so that sheering takes place in the outer 2 inches only. The mixer has a throughput of at least 200 galls/ min. An example relates to the composition of a drilling mud made with sea water (see Division E1).
