Abstract

1500784 Washing vehicle windscreens and head-lamps VDO ADOLF SCHINDLING AG 8 July 1975 [18 July 1974] 28766/75 Heading A4F An assembly for installation in a vehicle for washing components of the vehicle, e.g. the windscreen and the head-lamps, at two spaced locations, comprises a liquid reservoir 1, a reversible rotary pump 2 having an inlet 4 connected to the reservoir and having two outlets 11, 12, a motor 5 to drive the pump in either direction, nozzles 9, 10 connected to outlets 11, 12 and positioned to spray liquid at the two locations, e.g. on to the windscreen and head-lamps, respectively, and pressure responsive valve means 18 for controlling liquid supply to the nozzles 9 and 10 according to the direction of drive of the pump, the drive direction determining which of the outlets 11, 12 is at a higher pressure than the other. As shown the direction of rotation of an impeller pump 2 is determined by a 3-position switch 8 thereby determining which outlet 11 or 12 is subjected to higher pressure than the other. High-pressure at 12 supplies nozzles 10 via line 16, and nozzles 9 via lines 16 and 17 and one-way valve 18. Highpressure at 11 supplies nozzles 9 only via line 14. Pressure-operated valves 13, 15 prevent back flow of liquid. In a modification Fig. 2 (not shown) using a pump having an inlet on the axis of rotation of the impeller, a diaphragm valve (30) responsive to differential pressure is connected to the lines 14 and 16. The pressure-responsive valve means can alternatively be arranged so that liquid is supplied to the nozzles 9 independently of the nozzles 10 according to the rotary direction of the pump.
