Abstract

1,162,302. Windscreen washing apparatus. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. 14 March, 1968 [16 March, 1967], No. 12314/67. Heading A4F. [Also in Division F1] A windscreen wiper and washer apparatus comprising a reciprocatory pump 8 having an inlet (14) (Fig. 1, not shown) connected to a washing liquid supply (21) and an outlet 15 connected to a windscreen washer jet (26) is provided with a gear train which drivably interconnects windscreen wipers and an electric motor, one of the gears of the train being provided with a cam member 5 which is arranged to actuate the pump under the control of a valve (23). As shown, the reciprocatory pump 8 is provided with a diaphragm 9 which supports a cam follower 17 urged towards the cam member 5 by a spring 11. With the control valve (23) allowing flow of liquid from the supply (21) to the pump 8 and the electric motor in operation to drive the wipers, the cam member 5 acts upon the cam follower 17 against the spring 11 so that during successive reciprocations of the diaphragm 9 liquid is drawn from the supply (21) and pumped to the washer jet (26), non-return valves (22, 27) preventing incorrect flow of liquid. With the valve (23) positioned to prevent flow of liquid to the pump 8 from the supply (21) and the electric motor in operation the diaphragm 9 on being urged by the cam member 5 to its position remotest from the gear train is maintained by the pressure conditions within the pump at this position so that the cam member 5 and follower 17 then become at least partially disengaged.
