Abstract

1500451 Carbonizing coal CENTRO SPERIMENTALE METALLURGICO SpA 6 Jan 1976 [21 Jan 1975] 00275/76 Heading C5E A method of carbonizing a pit coal comprises (a) grinding the coal; (b) drying and heating the ground coal at a temperature of 200-300‹ C. in a first fluidized bed reactor using a fluidizing medium which comprises 50-100% air, 0-50% steam and 0-50% nitrogen (all by volume) for 15 min.-2 hr. and (c) heating the thus treated coal in a further fluidized bed at a temperature of 400-600‹ C. for 10 min.-1 hr. using an initial fluidizing medium comprising 0-20% air, 0-50% steam and 50-100% nitrogen which is progressively replaced by a fraction of the gaseous effluent from the further reactor. A third fluidized bed stage may be employed in which the material from the second fluidized bed is heated to a temperature of 800-1100‹ C. for 10 min.-1 hr. The fluidizing medium for this reactor initially comprises 30-100% nitrogen and up to 70% air, and is progressively replaced by recycled gases from the third reactor.
