Abstract
1492563 Producing coke CENTRO SPERIMENTALE METALLURGICO SpA 26 Nov 1974 [29 Nov 1973] 51155/74 Heading C5E A method for the production of semi-coke from coal comprises the steps of (a) grinding the coal; (b) drying and heating the ground coal in a fluidized bed reactor at 200-300‹ C for 15-120 mins; (c) heating the ground coal, in a first fluidized bed semicoking reactor, at 400-600‹ C for 10-60 min, the gases and vapours evolved preferably being treated to condense the tars and a fraction of the remaining gases then being recycled to the first semicoking reactor to provide at least a part of the fluidising medium; and (d) heating the thus-produced material in a second fluidized bed semicoking reactor at 800-1100‹ C for 10-60 min, a fraction of the gases evolved being recycled into the second semicoking reactor. The semicoke produced is then converted into coke by a conventional method. The initial fluidizing medium for the first semicoking reactor may consist of air (0-20% by volume), steam (0-50% by volume) and nitrogen (50-100% by volume) and that for the second semicoking reactor may consist of air (0-70% by volume) and nitrogen (30-100% by volume). In an example, the heating and drying step is carried out in air, and the subsequent semicoking stages in nitrogen. In the first semicoking stage a gaseous mixture containing CH 4 , CO, CO 2 , C 2 H 6 is produced, and in the second semicoking stage a mixture of H 2 , N 2 and CO is produced.
