1499806 Safety showers A E B KEARSEY 1 April 1975 [4 Jan 1974] 00364/74 Heading A4N An outdoor safety shower comprises a baseplate 3, a stand-pipe 1 having an inlet 7, a removable heating cable 2 to provide water at 35‹C, a main outlet 10 with nozzle 22 providing a strong spray to remove corrosive material from a person, and a flexible pipe outlet 11 providing a weaker spray for washing eyes, there being valves 12, 13 which may be actuated by lever and rod arrangements, Fig. 3 (not shown), to control the flow at the outlets 10, 11 respectively. Light fitting 19 may be actuated automatically on use of the shower by actuation of the valves to indicate that the shower is in use and act as an alarm. The valves may alternatively be solenoid valves actuated automatically by a photo-electric cell or pressure-sensitive platform, or manually by a push button at either 23 or 24. Heating may be by cable or immersion heater. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the stand-pipe may be in two parts joined by an elbow-joint (32) with the valves each being operated by a lever alone (17 and 18). A plurality of showers may be combined into a system, Fig. 4 (not shown), with water circulated from a common storage tank (26) by a pump (28) to the showers (25) and back. Pressure indicators 29 are connected to a control room (30) to indicate use of a shower. The storage tank is heated by an immersion heater or steam heating coil. In addition or alternatively to the nozzle 22, one or more horizontally directed nozzles may be provided.
