Abstract

1499517 Unscrewing drill pipe sections STENUICK FRERES 18 Feb 1975 [18 Feb 1974] 6811/75 Heading B3N [Also in Division E1] In an earth boring machine of the type having a rotary drill motor 2 movable along a guide column 3 and having a drive shaft with a threaded end portion 22 for threaded engagement with the threaded connection 121 at the top end of the uppermost element 101 of a drill string (e.g. of rods or pipes), reverse torque is transmitted to the uppermost element 101 to unscrew the joint between the uppermost element and the next element 102 (which is held stationary by a spanner) by means of a skirt 4 having internal flats and which is slidably mounted on a portion 212 of the drive shaft having external flats for movement between a retracted position (Fig. 5) and an advanced position (Fig. 4) in which the internal flats on the skirt 4 engage flats 12 formed on the top end of the drill string element. The skirt 4 is moved by means of a double acting jack formed by a piston 40 secured to the skirt 4 and a cylinder 5 fixed to the motor 2.
