Abstract

1499185 Grooving tubes UPO OSHKEYHITO 9 April 1975 [11 April 1974] 14629/75 Heading B5A A mandrel for grooving a tube comprises a shaft 1 supporting two sets of segments 8/12 that are movable radially, one set after the other by surfaces 24/17 inclined to the mandrel axis and axially spaced one from another. As described, a metal sleeve 14 (Fig. 1) and a plastics tube 15 to be grooved are placed over the mandrel so that the segments 8/12 form a groove 7 in the tube 15. Thereafter, the shaft 1 is withdrawn to the left, and a spring-urged guide ring (4-7)/11 holds the segments against movement with the shaft. The set of segments 12 slide down the inclined surface 17, guided by a T-slot 18, to rest against stops 19/20, while the set 8 slides along a non-inclined surface 21 and pushes the sleeve 14 and tube 15 before it. Afterwards, the segments 8 slide down the inclined surface 24 until arrested by a stop 27 whereafter the tube 15 and sleeve 14 can be withdrawn uninterrupted from the mandrel. The plastics tube 15 is preformed before grooving, or is cast, pressed or extruded about the mandrel.
