Abstract

1431927 Grooving pipes HEPWORTH PLASTICS Ltd 5 July 1973 32098/73 Heading B5A A mandrel for grooving a thermoplastics pipe 22 comprises annular, coaxial body parts 1A, 1B and a plurality of segments 4 movable radially by respective pistons 5 to project from or be withdrawn within the outer peripheries of body parts 1A, 1B. Successive segments 4 are interlocked by tongues and grooves 12, 13 (see also Fig. 2, not reproduced), and are moved radially by oil pressure and suction from a central chamber 6, with the pistons 5 moving in cylindrical guides 7 and surrounded by seals 8. The segments 4 are encased by an elastomeric band 9, and force the pipe wall 23 into grooves in surrounding mould parts 11. The body parts 1A, 1B are supported by a tube 14 secured to a support plate 19; cooling water is circulated through channels 27, 26 and 25. The end of the heated thermoplastics pipe 22 is enlarged by pushing over the mandrel, and the segments 4 are projected either before or after this engagement.
