Abstract

1431714 Grooving pipes HEPWORTH PLASTICS Ltd 5 July 1973 32099/73 Heading B5A The end 23 (Fig. 1) of a heated thermoplastics pipe 22 is enlarged and provided with a groove 24, by a mandrel comprising body parts 1A, 1B and a plurality of segments 4 that can be projected from, or withdrawn within, the outer surface of the parts 1A, 1B. Links 8 pivoted one to each segment 4 and to an axial member 7 (see Fig. 2) project or withdraw the segments when the member 7 is rotated. The segments 4, which are interconnected by tongues and grooves 18, 19, are guided for radial movement by keys 5 fitting keyways 6, and are encircled by an elastomeric band 20. Member 7 is rotated by a manually-, hydraulically-, or pneumatically-operated handle 13 which is movable between stops 16 and 17 (or link movement is limited by the edges of slots 12 in a tubular support 11). Water pipes 35, 36 carry cooling water to cavities 25, 26. The mandrel is supported by a plate 14 and is positioned between mould parts 27. The pipe is pushed over the mandrel before or after the segments 4 are projected.
